Family Immigration

U.S. Citizens can petition for parents, spouses, siblings, and children. There is no limit on visas available for Immediate Relatives of U.S. Citizens, which include:
  • Unmarried children under 21,
  • Spouses
  • Parents, and
  • Widows / Widowers of U.S. Citizens.

Permanent Residents
are only able to petition for spouses and children.


Relatives in the following preference categories, however, are subject numerical limits on the visas that can be issued each year:
  • First Preference - Unmarried sons or daughters (over age 21) of U.S. Citizens
  • Second Preference 
    • 2A – Spouses and unmarried children (under age 21) of Permanent Residents
    • 2B – Unmarried children (over age 21) of Permanent Residents
  • Third Preference - Married children of U.S. Citizens
  • Fourth Preference - Brothers and sisters of U.S. Citizens
